Is Olive Oil A Good Choice?

cannabis tincture

Of course it is. Extra virgin olive oil is incredibly healthy due to its powerful antioxidants. It benefits your heart, brain, joints and skin too! Olive oil is also fast absorbing for skin care applications. However, it is important to examine labels carefully because there is a lot of fraud on the olive oil market. Whenever you are shopping for olive oil, it’s always a good idea to read ingredients lists and check for quality certifications before you purchase it.

Are there other oils I can use?

Yes, coconut oil, avocado oil, grape seed oil, black seed oil, and several others are all good alternatives, each with their own unique qualities to combine with your cannabis or hemp flower.

This recipe calls for decarbed cannabis or hemp flower/bud/trim. If you are starting out with fresh material, this link will show you how to decarboxylate fresh cannabis for THC, and this one will show you how to decarboxylate hemp flower for CBD.

What you will need:

  • 1/2 to 1oz of either decarboxylated cannabis or hemp
  • 14oz extra virgin olive oil
  • Cheesecloth or coffee filter

  • tablespoon of sunflower lecithin (optional)

Once you have decarboxylated your cannabis or hemp, you can move on the next steps.

Mason Jar Method:

  1. Place decarbed plant material and olive oil into one of the mason jars and put the lid on
  2. Place the jar into a pot of water making sure that the water on the outside of the jar is almost up to the same level of oil that is inside the. The jar should stand upright
  3. Allow to simmer on a medium setting for 2 to 4 hrs. Gently shake jar occasionally every 30 min or so (use a potholder, it will be hot!)
  4. Remove jar from pot of water and allow it to cool
  5. Use coffee filter or cheesecloth to filter oil into the second mason jar
  6. Add in liquid sunflower lecithin (optional) and stir or shake well

Note: If you’re concerned about odor, the mason jar method produces the least amount of smell.

Crock Pot Method:

  • Place decarbed weed and olive oil into one of the crock-pot on low setting
  • Allow to heat on a warm setting for about 4 hrs Stir occasionally every 30 min or so
low temp and long baking time is to make sure your olive oil and plant compounds won’t burn away
  • Allow crock-pot to cool before straining
  • Use coffee filter or cheesecloth to filter oil into the second mason jar
  • Add in liquid sunflower lecithin (optional) and stir or shake well
